The R521 COOLIDGE

As a jack of all trades designer I have to be ready for anything every day of the week. My Studio Manager always has something quirky and random up her sleeve for me, even if its something kind of mundane for one designer its usually something I don't often face on a daily basis. This means being ready for anything and carrying the kit around with me to do so. Luckily the humble backpack is 'En Vogue' but those fashion caddies really don't cut it for me. You can barely fit a thing in them, they barely support you and a metal rule will just cut straight through the thing! So it was great to find some sexy backpacks being released that are practical, weather-fit for the UK and could hold a large amount of stuff and wonder, I present the R521 Coolidge backpack by Freitag!

Freitag bags have been around for ages, and for me they've always seemed a bit dated, but they've just released something super sexy along with a whole bunch of other stuff and here's the result!

Back in 1993, graphic designer brothers Markus and Daniel Freitag were on the lookout for a messenger bag. Zurich citizens worthy of the name travel by bicycle - 'velo,' they call it. When it rains, they get wet. The FREITAG brothers wanted a heavy-duty, functional and water-repellent bag to carry their designs. Inspired by the cheerfully coloured lorries rumbling along the cross-Zurich highway just in front of their flat, they cut a messenger bag out of an old truck tarpaulin. As the carry belt, they used second-hand car seat-belt webbing, while an old bicycle inner tube provided the edging... They now employ more than 170 people and have developed and marketed several bags for women and men, as well as accessories for the iPhone, iPad and a range of wallets.
