Roots and Bulbs

Marylebone gets rooted in goodness.

I know I am blessed. I am a educated westerner living in a first world country. I think about this on the mornings when I stare up at the charity ad campaigns on my tube trip or watch the 'Just Give' adverts or comic relief showreels. And even though I hate the middle-classness of wheatgrass and organic goods and kind of think that money should be going to the folks who need a bag of rice or a running tap in their village, I can't help (when I'm feeling virtuous and healthy) wanting to just pile lots of fresh, healthy fruit and veg in my little temple.
I strongly believe that whatever you put in your body, your body will return in kind or malfunction. I was taken ill at 18 and ever since have done what I can to be aware of keeping myself as well oiled as possible to keep as fully functional holistically as I can.
So when this little beauty popped up around the corner from my office I was as chuffed as a little falafel ball!
Welcome to London’s first cold pressed juice bar! I'm not sure if you are aware of the benefits of cold press, but it is becoming widely known that blending fruit and veggies actually degrades and burns off the goodness but metabolises their sugars, turning a potentially super healthy smoothie into a sugar loaded waste of time and tastebuds.
"Cold press is a careful technique which preserves more nutrients than alternative methods, creating juices brimming with natural goodness and flavour." -Roots and Bulbs
Introducing Roots&Bulbs our new neighbours, though they are already swarmed with competition if you walk in to any Tesco, PRET or Natural Kitchen.
"The deliciousness doesn’t end there.  We also make superfood smoothies and fabulously wholesome organic meals, available in our shops, and to order." -Roots and Bulbs
The owners Sarah and Laurent Cadji decided to begin working on the concept of Roots and Bulbs in 2012. "Living and working in London, we had demanding work schedules and the usual busy life that made eating healthy away from home a real challenge."... "There is just not enough time to be a good employee, employer, wife, husband, parent and to find the place or the time to eat well." -Something that I think most London commuters can affiliate with.

"In 2009, following long working hours and a heavy travel schedule, Sarah decided to take her health into her own hands. She started to read extensively, began focusing on the connection between what you put in your body and how you feel. the results were amazing. her feeling of intense wellbeing led her to learn more and resulted in us changing the way we both ate and lived. we began to extensively juice and started experimenting with smoothies and take greater note of what we put in our bodies. We encouraged and inspired each other, to be and feel better with food. This focus on better, cleaner real food led us to a clear problem. Living in London, there was no option to live healthy on the go.
We did not want complicated fussy food. We just wanted clean, organic ingredients that were not sold to us with empty promises. We wanted the real juice, with no pesticides and sugary fruits inside that spiked our insulin levels. We wanted to have the smoothies we make at home, with organic home made almond milk, raw cacao powder, hemp protein powder, seeds, nuts and amazing coconut water. But we could not find it anywhere. So, we decided to start Roots and Bulbs.
We do not make empty claims. we do not seek to compromise on our ingredients. We are, like you, busy active Londoners who want to feel good and live well."

When you walk down Marylebone highstreet, especially if you approach from Oxford Street, the south-end offers a few nice stores but they get quickly lost amongst the drudge of Rymans and tacky but posh fashion stores. But suddenly your buzz slows as you cross the path of an urban oasis, the fresh, clean and unique style that is the Roots and Bulbs store.
 5 Thayer Street, Marylebone

Its unique, rippling out door pine box seats, often have bottoms nestling upon their undulations. The windows gleam with a crisp white, modern vinyl of the their logo and you suddenly refocus to capture the wheatgrass aligning their worktop and perfect rows of industrial hardware, which individually clasp each little bottle of goodness like a diamond gleaming in coal. When you enter the ambiance is gentle and friendly, tasters are on the counter top, along with beautiful takeaway menus and organic and interesting recipes for edible lunches. Yes they are pricey, but there is no getting away from the cost of fresh, genuine produce and a slow handmade process as well as thoughtful and well balanced recipes. They indeed not only have the recipes for good food but a recipe for a healthy, holistic lifestyle in a busy, stressful, fatty food commuter world.
I really love their clean branding, their print work especially and a really calm store design with the juxtaposition of machinery versus nature, they have a great concept, I just hope they can keep up against their mainstream competitors!

If you can afford it, I recommend you do it (maybe put a few quid in a charity box too!) But if you're in the area, please hunt them down! W1U 3JG
Why not get one of their juice plans?...
Roots and Bulbs version of a cleanse: Time Out a juice plan with a difference.
It’s a gentle reboot that’s been carefully devised to deliver concentrated levels of nutrients along with some fibre, fat and protein. This is a short term plan – usually one to two days – that provides responsible nutrition as well as time away from having to make food decisions. Time Out supplies 5 bottles of juice, 2 of almond milk and individual packets of specially selected organic nuts. The juices are made from organic vegetables and have a naturally low fructose content whilst adding almond milk offers a little protein which helps stabilise blood glucose levels and also gives some variety. Nuts give you crunch, protein and fibre to help energy levels and avoid that unnecessary hunger associated with many juice fasts. We aren’t trying to cut your calories to a level that you feel dreadful, instead we offer a practical short term focus.
