I've been hanging around Brixton like a street rat for years, ever since an old work colleague helped me get back into fitness by offering to take me swimming with her every Sunday 8 years ago.
When I got out her car I was hit by the vibrant streets and happy street community feel. It felt as though people were going to burst out of the reggae shops and jerk chicken vans in bright african head dresses and start bogle-ing to the festival beats. I fell in love instantly and never looked back.
Things have, of course, moved on a lot in Brixton since then but the vibe remains. The streets are a lot cleaner and safer. The indoor market is not just a pleasure and a joy but packed full of inspiration and is a mecca for everyone. Great deals on seafood, homewares and vegetables and unique craft, design and ethnic-ware shops are everywhere, which I know sounds like a contradiction but in a place where almost every ethnic group you can think of resides, there is plenty of diversity.
On weekdays they have food stalls called 'The Food Corner'. And a Friday Market where there is street food and vintage clothing for sale. At weekends there’s a different kind of market each Saturday, Bakers & Flea market, Makers Market, Retro & Vintage Market and the Brix Mix market.
Some months of the year they have a fifth week. And they celebrate it (like we all should!). So they make a fuss and throw a one-off market. They’re more like events, and they change every time. You get a real mix of market stalls that have something for everyone. - Text from http://brixtonmarket.net
